Based in Belgium, Gavox was early on the micro-brand scene, launching in 2011 with their first watches crossing our desks in 2013. But it’s been a little while since we last had a Gavox in the office for review. In December 2019, they launched a 36mm pilot’s watch with a quartz movement and a “dirty dozen” appeal. As we all know, shortly after, life changed quite a bit. But Gavox persisted if quietly, making a bold return in late 2022 with the announcement of a new and ambitious watch powered by the equally exciting Miyota 9075 “flyer” GMT. Called the Longitude, it’s a fresh take on the integrated bracelet sports watch, combining a handful of timely trends into a well-specced-out package.

Named to inspire a sense of exploration, it also has a personal connection Michael Happé, the founder of the brand. A descendant of Dirk Hartog, a 17th-century Dutch explorer who is credited as the first Western European to set foot in Australia, the watch celebrates this connection. Despite the historical and seemingly nautical roots of the Longitude, the watch itself is a very modern expression of adventure. Available in four colors at launch, including an entirely black DLC version, the Longitude has a final price tag of $1122, but is available for pre-order at $762 through March, 2023.

Notable Specs and Features

Gavox went out of its way to pack the Longitude with features. Some expected but still welcome features are a sapphire crystal, 200m water resistance, and a bi-directional 24-click bezel. And then, there are the special features, like a Kolsterized case that is 1300 Vickers hard on the outside for high scratch resistance. Also, the new Miyota 9075 “flyer” GMT automatic movement, as previously mentioned. While this movement might eventually be ubiquitous, it currently has only appeared in a small handful of watches, and greatly adds to their value and functionality. Measuring 39mm x 43mm x 12.8mm with a flat crystal, the Longitude is a happy medium.

But perhaps my favorite feature is that the Longitude not only comes on an integrated bracelet but also with a set of additional end links that allow for the use of 20mm straps. A piece that all integrated bracelet watches should have, it solves what is, arguably, the worst feature of integrated strap/bracelet designs, which is a lack of third-party strap support. While the included bracelet is well-designed and finished, playing off of a faceted motif from the dial, the watch happens to sing on a mil-strap.

Impressions

The Longitude is an appealingly different watch. At a glance, the overall package might speak to various concepts and watches from the past (admittedly, most watches do), and yet there is a novelty to the design up close. The 39mm cylindrical body puts a visual emphasis on the rotating bezel, which has a vaguely Explorer II appearance from the alternating numerals and triangles, yet feels more aggressive. The Rolex similarities quickly end there (and to be clear, are not an issue), as traditional lugs are replaced with a faceted appendage that transitions from the case to the bracelet.

There is a bit of a contrast in the style of the case and the bracelet that works in the watches’ favor. The case is simple, compact, and a bit mid-century. The bracelet is harsh, angular, aggressive, and contemporary. Had the aggressive design of the bracelet been pulled into the case it would have been too much or looked like it was trying too hard to stand out. Had the simpler, mid-century style of the case been dominant, it might have been boring. As is, it’s balanced.

Of course, this is also to offset the heavily textured dial. Consisting of two parts and applied markers, the dial features a seemingly random motif of – well – you take your pick. Sometimes I think it looks like choppy water seen from above. Other times, it appears like chiseled stone. Yet others, fractured ice. No matter what you see, it’s a pronounced, organic but harsh texture that covers everything but the chapter ring. Whether or not the rise of Grand Seiko can account for the increased use of texture in new watches is up for debate, but regardless of the inspiration, I’m happy to see it here as it adds a different dimension to the watch.

The attention to detailing is carried to the markers and hands as well. Each marker has many facets, a mix of finishing, and lume fill. The dauphine hour and minute hands feature a play in finishing that gives them a sense of volume they don’t actually have, playing off of the markers. A steep chapter ring further adds depth to the dial. All in all, it’s quite impressive and engaging.

As you can see in the photos, I was supplied two versions of the Longitude. One in steel with a medium blue dial, the other black DLC with a black dial. Both looked great, though the contrast of the steel markers and hands against the blue dial did make it more legible than the very stealthy all-black model. That said, the black had a little extra attitude that made it call out to me more when I was deciding between which to wear.

The bracelet itself is nicely made and finished. It features H-links with a pointed shape, brushed on the incline and polished on the edges. This creates the faceted look of the watch, playing off of the dial. The connecting links are polished and rounded adding contrast in finish and shape. It all works. My only issue, and this might be “just me” is the 2mm taper from 22mm to 20mm. It’s quite thick and hefty. 22mm looks great proportionally against the case. But the slight taper just feels very heavy on the wrist. Another two to four millimeters would have lightened it up significantly. Conversely, had the watch been titanium, the reduced weight could have compensated.

That said, Gavox supplies converter end-links (just made that term up) allowing for 20mm straps to be attached, as mentioned before. This is just genius as it infinitely opens up the versatility of the watch, while still being an integrated design. And, the watch looks great on leather, nylon, and I would imagine rubber as well. One thing to keep in mind though is that because of how these end-links attach, they move the attachment point of the strap way out, with about 55mm between the spring bars. As such, you might find yourself needing shorter two-piece straps. Pass-through straps, however, will be just fine and were my preferred method for wearing the Longitude.

The last thing worth mentioning is the Miyota 9075. Well, it does what it says it does. The hour hand jumps in first position, forward and back, allowing for fast adjustment when passing through time zones. The date is also set by rotating the hour hand. This is the downside of all “flyer” GMTs, but only an occasional issue unless you let the watch die often (and you should wear it!). That this is now available in a circa $1,000 watch that is not part of a major group is what’s really special, and I’m still giddy about it. Gavox put the movement to good use here, as the Longitude is a great travel companion.

Conclusion

When a brand has been quiet for a little while, just running and minding its own business without a ton of releases, it can be tricky to come back and make enough noise to get the attention of the easily distracted masses. I think Gavox has achieved just that. The Longitude is feature-rich, rugged, clever, and well-executed. It manages to combine an integrated sports watch design with a textured dial, a new “flyer” GMT, a hardened case, and a unique-enough style into an affordable package. It’s a watch that people should pay attention to. It might not be for everyone, no interesting watch is, but for those looking for a highly capable, all-purpose sports watch, or an integrated bracelet watch with a different style, it has a lot to offer. Gavox

Excitation is growing up as the 3rd edition of Aurochronos Festival (Lodz / Poland) will be held on the next 5th and 6th October.

Watchisthis is proud to be their partner from the first day and of course we will be there for this new edition. Our editor in chief, Jonathan Kopp, will be part of the jury and this year it’s going to be hard to choose the winner for each category.

For this year it’s more than 50 brands that will show their work. We will have microbrands, more established brands and high luxury like Arnorld&Son.

The visitors will have the chance to see brands like Aevig, Brellum, Crafter Blue, Gavox, Havaan Tuvali, Alfa Flag, Anonimo… and so many others. With all these brands we can easily say that Yes, the show is growing every year.

We love this festival, not just because we can see tons of watches, but also because of the friendly ambiance.

We asked questions to some exhibitors, participants and organizers.

To Armand Billard (Sartory-Billard watches) : This year will mark your first participation to Aurochronos. With everything you’ve heard about the show, what are you waiting for? How do you imagine the fair? What are your expectations?

It is a show with a very good growth and which has a prestigious jury at the height of the interest. I imagine a relaxed and open minded fair with many passionate. I’m happy to be able to present my pieces to a market that I do not know for the moment. It’s important for brands like mine to show our work. Of course I’m glad to meet my colleagues from various countries. This will be a good moment to exhange about our experience. I’m also very happy to go to Poland for the first time!

To Filipe Silva (eponimous brand) : You where there for the first edition and you’re back this year. Why is it so important for you to be present at Aurochronos ?

Because the first year I found there a really great atmosphere. It is an open Festival, the price is attractive for small brands, but also, almost all brands are independent and I find it important.
Whether you are an established (micro)brand or a small watchmaker, all brands are treated equally during Aurochronos. Moreover, I think the Polish market is booming, and so, it deserves the attention of microbrands such as mine.
It is also a good way for me to discover other creators that I would never have heard about otherwise.
Finally, the organizers and all the team, are all really kind and listening to us.

To Michael Happe (Gavox) : You were present last year at Aurochronos and of course you’ll be there this year. Could you let us know what’s your feeling about this show ?

Well, I just want to let you know that this show was really amazing. The fact is, the good organizers sent good invitations to lots of people in Poland. People that are doing a trip to see and try our watches during the Aurochronos fair… So yes, that’s already a good thing for all exhibitors. Moreover, they were banners, communication and articles everywhere in Poland regarding this event. Maciej and Pawel are two great organizers. As said, for the exhibitors it’s a very good fair because we get good reviews and a large visibility. They even were a contest, like a « Public Award » which creates a closer relationship between brands and visitors. Honestly, the whole make this event one of the best in Europe for microbrands.
Great organizers, great jury, great people, amazing venue and a really friendly ambiance… That’s Aurochronos !

To Maarten Henskens (Soma Horology Marketplace) : As a young start-up in the watch industry, why is it important to be physically present for a festival like Aurochronos ? What are you going to show ?

It’s very important to have a personal connection with our partners while we are still in a closed beta phase . Gathering feedback, suggestions from your partners is very valuable while we are developing.
Having a good relationship with our watch partners will also benefit us when we are scaling the protocol in the personal luxury industry.
SOMA will represent following partners at our booth : Ocean Crawler, Outcast, Gruppo Gamma, and Aevig. We will also help with the premiere launch of D’Longueville new watch.
I will also give a presentation at Aurochonos : Sunday, 11 :00 – 11h45 “Maarten Henskens – Prezentacja projektu SOMA (SOMA project presentation)“.
These are our partners who will be present at Aurochronos this year.

To Magdalena Wojnar (Perfekta Wojnar) : Last year you were present at Aurochronos, in the middle of something like 30 watch brands, and as a strap maker I’m sure it’s interesting for you. What are the most interesting things for you when you go to a festival like this one ?

Well, last year was my first participation to Aurochronos and for me, at a personal point, I think that the most interesting thing was to meet people from different countries. It’s not very common for us to have in the same place, people from France, Italy, Netherlands, Asia…etc. So yes, I really liked this communion.
Now, from the point of view of my company, of course it’s interesting to participate in this kind of events. Customers can see and touch my straps directly.
I sold on the spot directly last year, but the most amazing thing is that I continue to have requests for my products today. Aurochronos was a beautiful showcase for me.

To Lukasz Gondi (Czasoholicy – Polish watch group) : As a polish watch enthusiast how do you consider the Polish watch market ? Do you think that Aurochronos can open doors in your country for brands ?

It seems to me that Polish market is still conservative. People buy a watch because they are familiar with the brand and their products. But there is a lot of people who are looking for something new and Aurochronos opens the door for new products. This is very good and, I think, a needed initiative. On Czasoholicy group there are people who bought for example Maison Celadon watches who was present during the two last edition of the Festival. So yes, there is an opening for new brands.

To Dan-Andrei Kluska (Blogger at WatchILove) : Last year was your first time on the show. Could you tell us in some words what’s your feeling about Aurochronos and the Polish watch market ?

Yes, last year was the first time I was able to participate. Of course, with regret that I could not participate in the first edition too. AuroChronos tends to become one of the most important players in the independent and micro-brand theater. Especially in the Eastern part of Europe. AuroChronos is a growing organism, becoming stronger as time passes by. Poland is a great market for any brand, regardless of the established Swiss or newcomer brands. The Polish people have a less judgmental mind regarding the timepieces, looking for quality and fair prices. That is why all brands, micro-brands especially, have a good chance of success in this market. That is my perception, and I hope that the third AuroChronos edition will cement this opinion.

To Artur Cholewski (Chronosapiens – Polish watch group) : We know that you’re at Aurochronos every year. Could you let us know what is so special to this show that you can’t see anywhere else ?

I think most important for me is personal contact with brand owners and watches. Here it’s really open, so you can speak directly with the owner or representent and you can try the watches. As a watch collector it’s something important.. you know to feel the watch. And sometimes you can even get discount prices… So that’s great. Well, Aurochronos is the first and only micro watch show in Poland, so of course we have to be there. More than that and thanks to Aurochronos we made new friends from different countries. It’s not « strict » like in Switzerland, here you have a friendly ambiance. It’s a good place to meet with friends and collectors from all over Poland. There are not many opportunities for such meetings. So Aurochronos is every year on my schedule.

To Pawel Zalewski (Co-organizer of Aurochronos) : What are the evolutions of this 3rd edition comparing to last year ?

This year’s edition is going to be not only bigger, but also more diversified than last year. We are going to host over 50 brands in the price range from couple of hundreds Euros to couple thousands Euros. We’re introducing a Premium zone and are going to work more on the visual side of the Festival. Moreover, this year there will be a novelty, the Gentlemen’s Corner, in which craftsmen from Europe will show tailor made and made to measure suits, shirts, accessories and so on.

To Maciej Mazurkiewicz (Co-organizer of Aurochronos) : What are your expection for this 3rd edition of Aurochronos ?

For this year, we expect, and hope, to increase the number of visitors and to introduce the world of independent watchmaking to an even wider group of Polish people. We hope that both the visitors and exhibitors will enjoy the 3rd edition and that we can still keep it as a friendly and open place for everyone.

Well you already know our own feeling about this Polish watch festival so no need to explain it another time. But what’s sure is that we are quite excited because we were present at the very first edition and we saw the evolution of Aurochronos.

This 3rd edition is going to be epic with a lot of surprises and we can’t wait to go there and to enjoy a weekend full of watches with our Polish and international friends  !

Les montres conçues par Michael Happé à Genval ornent les poignets de célébrités, de militaires, de grands dirigeants… Very exclusive.

The Gavox Aurora went to meet the Aurora Borealis this winter. I Created this watch to be a one of a kind Wristwatch with a few innovations of my own. Due to the research i put in this watch and of the fact that it is a watch made for pilots and astronauts, I named this watch Aurora. Also the Luminescent Dial and Hands remind the colors that can be created by these lights. ( An aurora, sometimes referred to as a polar light,)

When my good friend, Stephan from www.mynoise.net decided to go to lapland with his son end of December 2015, I knew he would have the possibility to encounter Northern Light (Aurora Borealis).

I challenged Stephan to take a picture of his Gavox Aurora showing both the watch and the Sky with a Aurora. You need to know that on that day the sky was cloudless, the temperature was freezing -14°F (-26°C ). Due to this cold, his Iphone and the Autofocus of his SLR camera Stopped working. The picture above needed a lot of trial and error to make sure the focus was right and this is very dim light. This shot needed a pause of 8 Second to get enough light.

Stephan told me that the cold was so intense that while making sure the shot was right, his finger appeared to be “Frozen”, “I can’t move my finger anymore”. After some time under fresh water the feeling came back.

Many Thanks to Stephane and Remi for the fantastic pictures
